Defending Jacob - William Landay Started a little slow, but picked up particularly when the trial began. By the end it was a freight train running out of control. Fantastic read!
Perdition - Ann Aguirre Review to come
Venom - Jennifer Estep I really liked this installment. I have to say that the repetition the author uses between books is really annoying. Also, I miss the recipes Estep included early on!
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky - Heidi W. Durrow Wow! Review to come
The Testing - Joelle Charbonneau I liked this book in it's concept. I felt that it was imaginative and enjoyed the protagonist having to use her wits to solve tests. I felt that there were WAY too many references to "I remember my father/brother/uncle?/ neighbor?" telling me/showing me X and it being the solution to the test. I would have preferred more of where the protagonist found the answers within herself. And on that note, even though I liked this book, the biggest problem I had with this title was in the moral overtones I felt permeated throughout the book. I am not referring to Biblical morality. I am referring to politically correct moral overtones that I felt were not only providing the supposed "right" answers, but also talked down to the reader.

I must admit that I am a huge fan of The Hunger Games. One thing that I liked about The Hunger Games was that Suzanne Collins presented us with uncomfortable and unimaginable situations for which we are left to search ourselves and decide: What would I do? If I did survive, what would that say about me? What will I have become? I felt that The Testing had entirely too many pat answers, particularly for a teenager who is away from home for the first time and who supposedly came from an extremely remote area. Her answers were not that of a coming-of-age girl struggling with who she is, but they are the thoughts from a woman who is in her late twenties, who's thought processes are well-formed and frankly has all the "right," politically correct answers. It could even be believable IF these were the opinions of her teachers or parents and then when she was on her own, these principles were rigorously tested as well. But from what I saw in The Testing, they were not. I was left wondering if perhaps the publisher/editor did not feel comfortable with allowing the young adult target audience to come to their own conclusions about the circumstances explored in the book and wanted to be certain that they were left with the "right" answers. If so, this is unfortunate. What could have been a smart, survival-type story was turned more into a flat, tame and frankly less interesting story.
Fifth Grave Past the Light - Darynda Jones Loved it! Cookie and Charley were hilarious. Reyes and Charley were closer together. We were able to see a nicer, more domestic yet still untamed Reyes. We learn more about Charley's abilities, but still frustratingly not enough. Overall, a really great read!
Calculated in Death - J.D. Robb Really a 3.5 stars. Too many bleeping names! Too much business jargon. IMO, a pretty lame reason to be murdered. Have to say I was greatly disappointed with the finale. It read like a bad episode of Hart to Hart.
Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn I have to say that I HATED this book about halfway through and then there was a dramatic shift. The last half was MUCH better than the first. Overall, I would give it between 3.5 to 4 stars.
Delusion in Death - J.D. Robb I would say 3.5 stars if the book ended where I thought it would. The ending pulled it up to a 4 star rating for me.
Celebrity in Death - J.D. Robb This one wasn't my favorite, but it was still good!
The Snow Child - Eowyn Ivey Absolutely magical!
The Other Side - J.D. Robb, Patricia Gaffney, Mary Kay McComas, Mary Blayney, Ruth Ryan Langan Dang! Loved this short story. Fantastic story that picked up and mentioned the murders Eve had just solved. Nice to see a little more resolution there. This story really creeped me out and I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened. Got to give it to Roarke for keeping an open mind. You know it's an unusual case when Roarke basically says, "you've got 24 hours and then we seek out an exorcist." LOL!
Treachery in Death - J.D. Robb 4.5 stars. So good!
Indulgence in Death - J.D. Robb I'm still loving this series. It's like popcorn, you cannot have just one. I really liked this one. Four stars doesn't seem to be enough but it wasn't quite 5 stars for me.
Twice Tempted - Jeaniene Frost Loved it! Cannot wait for book 3. :)
Promises in Death - J.D. Robb I love how at the beginning of the book, Eve says that NO ONE gets time off and then when it comes time for the bachelor party, half her team is off to Vegas with her hubby. LOL!
